Two Riverside Studios

Intro

This guided walk explores the influence of Hammersmith on two men, William Morris, whose arrival at Kelmscott House, in 1878, marked a change in his ideas on art, craft and politics and Peter Gill, in 1976, the first artistic director of Riverside Studios and like William Morris, a resident of Hammersmith.

Things To Know

The Route

Starting with Peter Gill’s innovative and original theatre work at Riverside Studios, the walk covers points of cultural and historical interest along the Thames Path to Kelmscott House, where William Morris started the Kelmscott Press and held meetings of his Socialist League. We continue to Hammersmith Terrace, home to his collaborator, Emery Walker, through what was once Hammersmith Village. We return along a slightly different route by the Riverside to Riverside Studios where the walk ends.
